While it is the case that the daily dress code in some non-profits is much more relaxed than in a corporate setting, you still need to dress professionally for the interview. Coming in jeans is disrespectful. Now, men, you can probably lose the pin-striped suit and opt for a well-matched jacket, tie and pants; this way, you could take off the jacket and tie when you get there if you get the vibe that you’re wildly overdressed—but at least you’ve arrived looking professional. For women, you don’t necessarily need to wear a suit but once again, you must look business-like. As a friend says, if you’re applying to be an accountant at a non-profit, dress “accountant,” not “non-profit.” And anyway, some large, international non-profits like major foundations have many corporate trappings.
