There are many resources that provide great information about the nonprofit sector The obvious place to start is www.change.org! You can also search by key word at www.GuideStar.org and the Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group (www.nonprofitprofessionals.com) has a great library of resources posted online. Check out www.Encore.org to gather information about the nonprofit sector especially if you are gearing up for a new career in the sector.

One of the best ways to explore the nonprofit sector is to volunteer in the nonprofit sector. Just as it would be difficult to say one thing about the "business sector" that would be true of both the hot dog street vendor and Microsoft, it's difficult to say one thing about the "nonprofit sctor" that is true of both animal shelters and a professional nonprofit theater company. So volunteer for a variety of organizations.
There are a plethora of online communities for various nonprofit organizations and career paths -- there are communities for volunteer managers, for people working in water and sanitation projects in developing countries, for people working in animal shelters, for people working in public relations and marketing for theaters, for people applying technoloy tools at nonprofit orgs, and on and on. Joining and lurking on these communities will also give you terrific insight into how nonprofits work.
