Job Description

TOCA seeks exceptional candidates for the new position of Development Director. Working under the supervision of TOCA’s Co-Directors, the Development Director will have primary responsibility for grant writing, funder communications, planned giving and media by communicating TOCA’s vision and values, strategies, successes, and challenges.

The Development Director will be responsible for development and implementation of TOCA’s fundraising and media activities. Job responsibilities include the following:

  • Lead and manage TOCA’s overall development efforts to raise funds for TOCA’s annual operating budget.
  • Research potential funding opportunities to support TOCA’s on-going and devel- oping programs.
  • In consultation with the Co-Directors, develop and prepare funding proposals and reports to foundations, government agencies, corporations and/or individuals.
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential corporate and foun- dation funders, and individual donors.
  • Develop and grow our individual donor base; manage annual giving campaign; cultivate major gifts.
  • Work with other staff to develop and implement communications strategy, partic- ularly the creation of various media such as the annual report, e-newsletters and web site content/updates.
  • Participate in TOCA programming, community events and cultural activities in order to develop a textured understanding of both the community and our organi- zation’s principles, strategies and impacts.

 

Skills & Qualifications

The successful candidate will have excellent communications skills – including highly effective writing abilities, comfort communicating with people from a variety of cultural contexts, and the ability to convey the complexity of our work to diverse audiences. She or he must be committed to TOCA’s vision and values including community empowerment, cultural vitality, focus on systems change, and creation of positive solutions to community problems. Experience working with Native communities is desired but not required.

Tohono O’odham Community Action (TOCA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a healthy, culturally vital and sustainable community on the Tohono O’odham Nation in Southern Arizona. Founded in 1996, TOCA has provided inno- vative programming that has won numerous awards, been featured in national media and received support from some of the country’s top foundations. Current program directions include a major initiative to create healthy local food and fitness environ- ments based in the O’odham Himdag – Desert People’s Lifeways.
