REPORTS TO:  President & CEO

SUMMARY

In coordinating the communications activities of the National Council of Nonprofits, the Communications Coordinator will be responsible for managing media relationships and promoting understanding of and support for the National Council, its state members, and local nonprofits. The Communications Coordinator will help to position the National Council nationally as an advocate for nonprofits, and promote the value of the state association network as a vehicle for building the capacity of the nonprofit sector to effect change in peoples' lives.  This position will offer the right candidate the opportunity to transform a traditional internal communications position into a proactive initiative that shines the light on the value of America's nonprofits.

Major Responsibilities

 - Communications: Plan, develop, and implement the National Council's communications and media strategies to increase visibility and awareness of our work, the state association network, and public awareness of the nonprofit sector.

 - Media Relations: Serve as the liaison to the national and trade media for the National Council.

 - Internal and External Editorial Oversight: 

      -Provide editorial oversight and quality control check for all communications to members as well as all external communications, including website and social media vehicles.

      - Oversee the production of major publications, including the annual report and other relevant printed and online reports.

       - Assist staff in the preparation of presentations, speeches, and opinion pieces.

 - Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

 - Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or related experience.

 - 3-5 years experience working directly with the media or in communications, preferably for a nonprofit, association, or legislative setting.

 - Superior writing, listening, and verbal communication skills, including exceptionally strong proofreading and editing abilities.

 - Media outreach experience

 - Experience blogging, drafting and posting website content, designing e-newsletters a plus.

 - Excellent attention to detail and research, analytical, and strategic thinking skills.

 - Excellent time management and organizational skills.

 - The ability to gracefully meet deadlines and to take initiative.

 - Expert computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Facility with Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign a plus.
